What things come to mind for others when they think of you? Do others see you as smart? Savvy? Generous? As a problem solver?

What do others call on you for? Are you typically invited to the table when there’s a need to develop a strategy? Do people want you in the room when something serious is going down? Or are you the space they seek when they need to sit and take a deep breath?

Though people will always see you through their own filters there’s one thing that you can do to make a strong and mighty influence on how you are perceived…

Show up the way that you want to be seen.

Make sure that your behaviors are consistent with what you want to be known for. This is not about being some inauthentic version of yourself. It’s about stepping into the shoes of your best self, sometimes even before you feel ready.

When people think of me or hear my name, I want them to think about wholeheartedness, compassion and love – in life and in the workplace. So my task is to ensure that I live and give in a way that is genuinely consistent with these things. I want to be perceived as open-minded, open-hearted and helpful, not because it’s some artificial random aspiration but because this is who I aspire to be. It’s the “me” that I recognize as my best and highest self. So I am always adjusting and realigning with that vision.

Dedicate some time to think about what you want in your career and in your life, whether it’s to land that director level position or land a spot in your child’s heart. And then, as you imagine yourself in that role, start to take on and embody the qualities and characteristics of “that” person. Before you know it you and your vision will be one and the same.
